Lions use roaring for communication, for instance, when separated, lions roar to let each other know where they are. The male's mane does not only make it seem larger, but also protects its throat from the enemies in fights. Lions are capable of running up to 30 mph when attacking prey. Rubbery pads on the feet of lion cats allow for a soft and noiseless tread.
