Lions - General Information
Lions - BehaviorLion cats are the only members of the Felidae family, who live in large groups called "prides." Prides usually consist of about 15 lions. The bulk of the pride is made up of related females and their cubs. One to three males normally join a pride for about three years. It is the females who do almost all the hunting for the pride. Dominant males have the right to eat first. Lions work in teams to stalk and ambush prey. Males normally form coalitions for defense, hunting, and companionship. Pride takeovers often happen when a resident pride's leader is too old and weak to defend its territory from the newcomers. If the newcomers win, they kill the old leader and his cubs. Lions - ThreatsLions face few threats from other species in their habitat. Lions will move out of the way when they see elephants approaching. Buffalos or hyenas may attack lions. However, people are the greatest threat to a lion cat. For instance, some African tribes consider hunting lions an important ritual.Lions - SubspeciesThere are several subspecies of lions, most of which live in Africa. As a matter of fact, there are few differences between the subspecies, except for the mane color and density. Katanga lion, Congo lion, East African lion, West African lion, or Senegal lion, and Somali lion are some of the subspecies of lion cats.
