Lions - Reproduction

Lion cats are a polygamous species. These animals can reproduce any time of the year. Any lactating female in a pride is likely to suckle any cub that belongs to the pride. Females give birth to a litter of 1-6 cubs. The gestation period makes 110 days. The newborn cubs are helpless, weighing approximately 2-4 pounds. Only half of the newborn cubs survive through their first year of life. Young lions can be forced out of the pride as early as 13-20 months old. Females tend to remain within their prides.

The lioness gives birth in a den made of rock or a dense thicket. When the cubs reach the age of one and a half months, the mother introduces them to the pride. The whole pride takes part in rearing the cubs. The cubs are weaned at about eight months of age.

Lions - Hunting

As it was mentioned, females do the major part of the hunting in the pride. Males do hunt when a pride is dealing with a very large prey item, such as a buffalo, for instance. The enormous strength of a male lion is required to bring down such a prey.

Lions hunt in groups, and very rarely do they hunt individually. Lionesses hunt by ambush. The hunting group chases the prey towards a lion cat lying in wait. Males eat first, and then it is the turn of females. If the prey is rather scarce, the young lion cats are likely to starve, as they come last in this line.
