Lions - Pictures
Lions - DietLion cats hunt on large hoofed animals, such as buffalo, impala, warthog, hartebeest, zebra and wildebeest. Lions also feed on a wide range of smaller prey, for example, rodents, young rhinos, and hippos. Lions prefer to stay away from adult rhinos, hippos, and elephants. After lions have brought down their prey and eaten, they may not hunt again for several days. Sometimes, a female lion cat can secretly hide the carcass and eat it somewhere behind the bushy vegetation. After consuming a meal, the pride may spend the next day resting and digesting their meal. Lions - Importance for HumansLions are some of the most respected animals in history. Nicknamed the Kings of the Jungle, or the Kings of Beasts, they are known in every country of the world. Lions have been hunted for claws, teeth, and their fur. Some lions are kept in zoos.Lions - Conservation StatusAll wild cats are known to receive some protection under the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species. There are National parks where lion populations are rather stable. The population of lions in Africa and India has reduced in size due to human impact, and other factors. In open savannas, lions serve as easy targets for poachers. Though the population of lion cats is declining, they are not listed as endangered or threatened at present.
